This video is a mixture of Science, S.S., & 5K buddy activities. In Science, students measured the diameter of bubbles they blew in order to determine their lung capacity. For S.S., pairs worked together to identify locations on globes using latitude and longitude. 5th grade played fox and chickens with their 5K buddies.

3rd Grade has started a new chapter all about water in Science. They will learn about the many uses of water, the effects of contaminated water, how water is cleaned, and the water cycle. In this activity, celery sat in water with food coloring overnight. The next day they observed the effects. They discovered that the colored water was carried through the stalk up to the leaves by thin tubes. We then discussed the possible consequences to the plant if the water had something harmful in it.

Students used a balance, triple beam balance, and spring scale to determine the mass of 3 different density blocks. They then used a graduated cylinder and water to figure the volume of the blocks. Finally, they calculated the density, (d=m/v). This was done in pairs and small groups.

Catholic Schools Week 2012

In Science, the Fifth  Grade has been studying atoms and the Periodic Table of Elements.  Each student selected an element and created a 3D model of it.  In pairs, we also created gumdrop molecules.

Fifth grade students observed chemical reactions involving a variety of materials, including Alka-Seltzer, calcium chloride, and baking soda.  They also researched, designed, built, and tested solar cookers to culminate our alternative energy unit.

Third grade students explored speed and electricity during two separate science experiments.  In one, they constructed ramps to see how the height of the ramp affected the speed and distance the ball traveled.  In the other, students lit bulbs by completing circuits.
